Daily SG: 29 May 2008

Singapore Patriot’s Gerald Giam talked about activists having an important role to play in our society. I agree. Activism is probably a relatively alien concept to most Singaporeans. Even I’m not sure what activism really is. Our politicians and the MSM have always been quick to portray non-sanctioned activism as a distraction, an unproductive destructive endeavour. We grew up under this mantra, and words like “ideals” and “fighting for your believes” hold little meaning to us. We are infused instead with words like “pragmatism” and “no free lunch”. And as filial sons of the nation, we steered clear of being “trouble makers” or “rocking the boat”. But now, with a whole generation of young Singaporeans growing up immersed in such foreign concepts like “free expression” and “personal liberty”, are we ready to welcome activism back into our society?

What is an activist? What makes one one and what does an activist do? Am I considered an activist by starting SGDaily? If “spreading the message” is one of the main aims of activism, why aren’t our activists blogging more (like their Malaysian brethren)? So far I’ve only seen a handful of local activist blogs. If you know of any, tell us, and let’s get more people reading their work.
