  4. 1,000,000 ANNOUNCEMENT Says:

[This an official message originating from the Primus Aldentes Prime and has been sent by the Chronicler on behalf of Harphoon EP 82134798/09A]

    Dear Valued Readers,

This is excellent news. It requires dedication, sound planning and competence to play the role of a public enterprise that adds real value to our blogosphere.

“g” and his team are finally beginning to think like businessmen and growing a thriving enterprise.

Indeed this is heartening and very good news.

Reaching this mythical figure may seem like a momentous milestone, but it will be meaningless, if we ALL do not take this opportunity to take stock of how aggregators, writers and readers can make the system better; one area that should be considered as a strategic priority is facilitating the growth of a new cohort of bloggers.

This is vitally important only because these days everyone from our government to the MSM seems to be only fixated on playing the role of the policeman viz-a-viz how to drive out the bad from blogosphere at the expense of how to make it more interesting and happening place.

I suspect this is because this all too easy a preoccupation as it only requires a limited quality and quantity of imagination.

But it is a million times more difficult to be a visionary like Bill Gates, Richard Branson or Steve Jobs and carve out something interesting that everyone wants to be part of.

Let me just say, I am certain the next milestone of 2 million can and will be comfortably reached without too much fuss, only it would be regrettable if the next million are reading basically the same thing regularly written what the first million read.

If that happens then we really need to sit down and think whether we have really made any real progress in making this a more interesting place.

My gut feel tells we must look at new ways and means to make blogosphere a more interesting and happening place. It is a mistake to assume this will all come about by sheer accident or to even leave it to governments to set the cadence and pace; in my experience whatever government touch it just becomes a dead zone, they are no good at business enterprises, that is why they are in the business of regulation, licensing and telling people what to do and not do. But let us be clear on a few things; none of this can come about without an engaged and active netizenry.

This task of sculpturing our blogosphere into another Paris, New York or Hong Kong cannot be accomplished by “g” and his team alone. Neither can it be delivered by the same bloggers in blogosphere. “g” can certainly facilitate, but the other 50% of the transaction that makes this dream possible is your role as an engaged writer who genuinely wants your work to be read and disseminated to a wider audience.

I believe there are many writers out there, many of them are caught in a catch 22 vicious cycle. They do not write because they don’t have any means of reaching out and so it is difficult and even impossible these writers to gain exposure. This is not only demoralizing but it offers them no effective way to break out from the shell of obscurity. They are trapped; we must reach out for these pockets and if possible even encourage them.

You can even say it’s like denying Michelangelo marble and restricting his working material to only clay; even then he would just end up as a potter.

So what we have here is a condition of demand and supply that has a direct impact on the rest of blogosphere that needs urgent correction.

This is something for ALL the aspiring writers to consider very seriously; can you just remain passive writers? Or should you consider being stakeholders in blogosphere and even take up the challenge of reaching out to a larger audience.

If you believe you have written some worthy or something that you want to share with the world, then post it here. I am certain “g” will do his level best to make sure it is given a light of day. If you feel that’s too much trouble then leave it as link on the comment box, where it will at least be noticed. Either way, you would have started the ball rolling to good effect and I am sure the team in Singapore Daily will help you in every way they can.

The important thing is you as the aspiring writer must feel comfortable with the idea touching base with aggregators like “g” and not be coy about it or even feel that you are demanding something which is not your right – a writer demands to be heard, that requires boldness and the dignity of silence serves the good of no one.

My feel is as stakeholders in blogosphere we must all try our best to make this a more interesting and happening place, but for this to happen we need to make the mental shift from being just content producers to stakeholders.

This means we really need to consider things like making sure new writers are regularly identified, promoted and even given the best conditions to grow and prosper.

Otherwise I can guarantee you all, in ten years time everyone will still be reading the run of the mill, BP, Molly Meek, Mr Wang, Mr Brown, TOC and the same personalities will continue to dominate the backdrop of our consciousness. Trust me we will be none the wiser for it and blogosphere will certainly continue to languish very much as a backwater.

Once again, may I wish the SD and their team well done and many happy returns and may I wish you all happy 43th Birthday.

Please do read our ND message here.

I am sorry if I over shot, but this is very important, very important indeed.

    Cheers

    Harphoon.

  6. pumpman Says:

We know what’s really happening here. You know Darkness the a liao chiau also knows what’s happening, did you know at one time he said this,

“How do you break the spirit of a writer? Take away his pen and paper and he will still be able to write in his head. No the best way to kill a writer and stop him dead on his tracks is to play around with the numbers and try to convince him that no one even cares to read what he writes; sooner or latter this mind game will force him (the writer) to throw in the towel. That is why the first lesson of a writer must be to tell himself again and again and again, he writes for no one else but himself. Write this in your mirror, laminate it and carry it in your wallet, keep it as a screen saver because that is how important it is; that sort of mentality requires not only discipline and dexterity, but I imagine, it must also include a dose of insanity in the form of self deception.

But this is necessary if the writer is to be prolific, otherwise how will he be able write as if he talking to a stadium filled with eager listeners? How is he able wordsmith his ideas into arrow heads which will find their mark? How is he going to kill the man who plays around with the stat counter? Tell me? Can someone please tell me? Can anyone tell me?…..Exactly, so let this be your first lesson. Other will come and go I am sure, but this one is a bit like losing your virginity; it must be sheered into your brain, heart and spirit.”

Darkness 2005 to the writers guild

  7. Harphoon Says:

    Pumpman,

I understand. Trust me, I do, Darkness was an excellent master, unlike others who held back, he shared with me everything he knew.

One thing that he taught me, keep your friends close, but keep your enemy closer.

And ALWAYS pretend to play along, humor them if possible, that ALWAYS gives stupid people a false sense of security.

It’s best if we keep the channel clear and conserve our energy.

May I remind you all AIMS and Mr Cheong et al will have to make their recommendations very soon to the govt, there will be much hay to make then.

    Trust me.

Close the channel Guild and move to full combat cloaking mode.

I will lead the attack myself on this one.

Happy reading all! Your Friendly controller, Aurora]

    Brief Excerpt:

“Standing there on the bridge surveying the sum of all our differences, I am reminded we have it all here, right now at this very moment. Ants don’t that at least should hold us all in good stead – not just to exist, but to search for a place whereby two people can walk in different directions yet always remain side by side. I need to believe this to continue. I am not that strong. I know it doesn’t show only because I hide it only too well.
What if, this ‘place,’ I want to call ‘wholeness’ resides in the litany of the ‘everyland’ - every minute, every hour, every day flickering like distant stars reminding us all of the nearness of angels? What if, amid all the empathy, caring, pathos of all life has to offer, it’s always been there? If only we care to still our minds, listen and understand? Not over the knoll. Not just around the corner. Not in some fairytale. Not at the end of the rainbow. Not even when we all eventually have to pass on, but right here, right now firmly in the palms of our hands.
    A place called paradise.”

    Happy Reading

    Aurora
