Weekly Roundup: Week 50

“We are not paying [service and conservancy charges] so that town councils can accumulate enormous sinking funds and act like little “Temaseks” and “GICs”… I can’t help but compare this to the old NKF collecting millions in donations but spending only 10 cents out of every dollar on the patients. The rest was wastefully spent or accumulated into huge reserves as we eventually discovered to our horror and disgust.”
Dhevarajan Devadas

“Mah Bow Tan explicitly said that each Town Council “has the duty to explain to its residents how it invests its funds, what is its philosophy, what are the risks it takes”. Yet, after meeting with [an un-named Minister], the Town Councils are going to shirk their duty with official sanction at the ministerial level.”
Benjamin Cheah

“It may make more business sense to let go of foreign rank—and—file workers rather than Singaporean workers if retrenchment is unavoidable.”
Lim Swee Say

Life in Singapore is wonderfully comfortable, so much so that Singaporeans have become contemptuous of people who fight for their beliefs. Just ask a random Singaporean what they think of Tibet or Palestine and chances are they’ll tell you that [they] should stop killing themselves for a lost cause..”
Tang Li

“Singapore will remain forever mediocre as long as the mediocrities in charge, oppose the rise of those who have something to offer, in ways which are new, or different.”
Valentine Cawley

Wishing our readers Selamat Hari Raya Haji. Have a wonderful long weekend!

Weekly Roundup: Week 49

“At any rate, it is important to note that the “Protest Culture” that opposition leaders are trying to create here is orientated about breaking the political apathy of Singaporeans as well as to question the government more about its actions. It does not contain TNT or bombs yet, and is nowhere near the more violent nature of the protests in Thailand. Of course, making the population more critical of the government is a slippery slope away to the violent protests in Thailand. At the same time though, an apathetic population is about as risky as a volatile one.”

The Secret Political Blog

“Despite our universities’ excellent grades, good reputation and relatively high international rankings, the institutions had failed miserably on planting creativity, fidelity, curiosity and expressiveness on its students. I can’t help but feel the students here resemble a plough horse; focus tirelessly on their goal of education- usually a paper certificate, and nothing else. While the farmer dictates the plough horses every movement around the fields, leading them along the way but never beyond the confined plot of land. This top-down model, faculty and students, is somewhat unheard of in other more liberal Ivy League universities. Clearly, the universities here did not provide an adequate, all rounded education our students desperately needed.
