Weekly Roundup: Week 03

“It is very unfortunate that you get attacked for doing your job. You bear the brunt of the frustration and madness that were initially targeted at the system you are part of, and unfairly so. It is a system problem as much it is a people problem, and both screw one another. If you are part of the system, or part of the people, you get burned in the midst of the screwing.”
Sam’s Thoughts

“Ironically, the evacuated p s y c h o s i s of Ong personifies/symbolises the Singapore state’s condition - The state, of mind - opaque, inexplicable, inversely irrational, utterly dehumanised.”
Cavalierio

“Truth remains everyone of us has a right to the unalloyed truth; doesn’t matter how bad it is; it remains our prerogative; our elemental right even and when it’s surreptitiously taken away from us and replaced by doggy soundbites instead.”
Just Stuff

“[SDP's] pro-democracy petition to the Myanmese embassy garnered 1,200 signatories. Now compare that to the 40,000 signatories in Singapore for a petition to end animal cruelty. Imagine that. We are 40 times more likely to campaign for animal rights than human rights. So before you wag your self-righteous finger at me, remember that in the end, the same people that cry injustice and pen down their names in remembrance with one hand, will sign away the rights of thousands of their countrymen with the other hand.”
Unbranded Bread and Butter

“At the heart of the matter lies the one principle that the government abides by, whether consciously or not: Citizens are dangerous and ignorant until proven otherwise. This is why MICA rejected the following two recommendations:”

“1. remove registration need for individuals, groups and political parties that provide online political content;
2. decriminalize the making of party political films”

groundnotes

“If there is much frustration being directed at the Government, perhaps it is time for Ministers and PAP MPs to step down from their ivory towers and look beyond their $100,000 per month, $200,000 per month salaries and understand the hardships faced by the working class.”

  1. NEW ESSAY/ BP17-01-09 Says:

NEW ARTICLE: WHY MICA NEEDS A NEW RAY GUN TO WIN THE INTERNET WAR – THE PERILS OF USING OLD SOLUTIONS TO SOLVE A NEW PROBLEM.

    BRIEF EXTRACT:

“Now I know what some of you are going to say right now; come on Darkness! Cheong Yip Seng et al isn’t proposing anything close to what you may have just share about the conditions that tipped the scale on Sufiah Yusof or the Annabel Chong’s of this world. All he’s really saying is kids should be told about the negative aspects of the internet, very much in the way road signs regularly warn motorist of bendy roads and blind corners. What’s wrong with that?

I disagree. You see the way I see it, there’s absolutely no wisdom (none whatsoever, unless you consider ploughing marina bay a sound enterprise) in trying to tell kiddies what is good or bad these days.

My point is, things have changed so dramatically; that the old methods of influencing kids may not even work reliably any longer; makes far more sense these days to treat kids like adults and consider empowering them with the ability to find out for themselves what’s actually good or bad by teaching them how to think critically and if possible even laterally.”

  2. NEW ESSAY/ BP18-01-09 Says:

Title: WHAT’S HOLDING BACK CHANGE – YOU!!!!!!!!!!

    Brief Extract:

“…..that if we don’t want equity in the whole idea of fashioning a bochap, brutish and ferocious society that is based on the law of the jungle; where only the fittest and the most intelligent survive and the weakest perish and deserve to die – then we can no longer remain bovine and dissociated ourselves from the choices we regularly make; it matters little whether it’s an innocuous or even a benign act – like a blog surfer who only reads only big blogs like The Online Citizen whilst disregarding small sites like the Singapore Daily or Tomorrow.SG – my point is even by that seemingly innocent act; unbeknown to many of us; we may actually be unconsciously fashioning a dystopian landscape by snuffing out the thousands of small voices out there in blogoland who all have something valuable to say to wordsmith the ongoing social narrative.

What then will we all be left with?”
