Weekly Roundup: Week 09

“..if we were the citizens of any other developed country, we would be happy to put our real names to our messages. But Singapore is not any other country..”
Lucky Tan

“Anonymity in cyberspace is an illusion. You will remember in 2007, we prosecuted three persons under the Sedition Act.. The reason we did that was to send the message that your words have an impact; if need be, we can identify you, and if we have to, we will be prepared to prosecute you.”
Vivian Balakrishnan, 21 Feb 2009

“..what is fascinating here is perhaps also the implicit suggestion that seditious bloggers were charged not necessarily because they did something wrong but because the people who charged them wanted to send across a message to the public to instill fear, to remind the public that they can be prosecuted.”
mollymeek

“The problem is, the elephant (the government) comes into the room and tries to define what a moderated internet should look like..”
Alex Au

Weekly Roundup: Week 08

Reporter: You mentioned that it took 11 days, this whole process [of unlocking the reserves].. Was that enough time?
Nathan: Yes, yes, of course. I think 11 days was reasonable. If it had to be, it could have been even shorter.
Transcript of President’s Press Conference, Straits Times, 18 Feb 2009

“I asked for all this information about the reserves. It took them three years to give it to me.. they [also] said it would take 56-man years to produce a dollar-and-cents value of the immovable assets.”
President Ong Teng Cheong Interview, Asiaweek, March 2000

“According to TODAY [18 Feb 2009], “The President reiterated that he was not here to judge whether these schemes would ultimately work..”. Not here to judge? Shouldn’t the man responsible for giving the government our money make it a point to judge if the money will be well spent?”
groundnotes

“A small part of me died with that article, and it simultaneously just proves how our government doesn’t see Singaporeans as citizens, but as workers, to be thrown away when they don’t function as well as before, and as a “choice”, to a foreign land if you can’t pay the bills here.”
Kenneth Koh

State of the Daily: Outbound Traffic

We’ve had Google Analytics running for a while now but had never really looked at the stats. Recently I dug around to see if it could tell me something useful and this was what I got. Some people might see the results as an indication of who’s more popular. Bearing in mind the numbers are also dependent on how often the site is updated and whether a reader allows GA scripts to run off his browser, that view may or may not be accurate. So stay cool and go easy on the flames :-) Not sure if this will be a regular thing. Drop me a comment on what you think of the results or if you feel this is useful.

Keep blogging!
