State of the Daily: Outbound Traffic
We’ve had Google Analytics running for a while now but had never really looked at the stats. Recently I dug around to see if it could tell me something useful and this was what I got. Some people might see the results as an indication of who’s more popular. Bearing in mind the numbers are also dependent on how often the site is updated and whether a reader allows GA scripts to run off his browser, that view may or may not be accurate. So stay cool and go easy on the flames :-) Not sure if this will be a regular thing. Drop me a comment on what you think of the results or if you feel this is useful.
Keep blogging!
The results after the break.

Stats from Google Analytics

February 18th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
This is very subtle. But you know what? It may just work :)
Nice tabulation :)

I was surprised to see my own traffic numbers. I have Google Analaytics but don’t check it all that often. Thank you.
But do we need this? I am not so sure. The numbers don’t tell, for example, that Mr Brown and Yawning Bread and many others are much better known than I am and rightly so. I have even heard Mr Brown interviewed on the BBC.
Another blog I love is myapplemenu.com, which links to the New Yorker, the New Republic, Slate etc.
And, of course, I like The Online Citizen and local aggregators such as Singapore News Alternative and the Singapore Daily.
The reason I am not so sure about publishing traffic data though my own came as a lovely surprise is that it may just heighten rivalries when it may be better for local bloggers to cooperate. Bloggers could become a modest alternative to the local mainstream media. That is why I like the local aggregators which bring together the various blogs, serving as alternative local newspapers. That’s the way to go.

abhijit, you dont seem to get SD’s hint to all of us do you? Its subtle. Very subtle abhijit. You will get it. Come on abhijit think.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
I am sure they would respond. If they could. Only from what I hear. They all seem to responding to a SOS issued from the Malaysians yesterday sometime in the evening. They have been parachuted there. It may have something to do with some lewd photos. They seem to be working with their Malaysian partners to track the culprit down. I hope they get that bastard! If anyone can find them, its those boys. Everyone has a right to privacy and the freedom to enjoy their body if they dont break any laws!
February 18th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Personally I think the numbers are showing, for lack of a better word, more “hardcore” politically aware readers. Not disputing Abhijit about mrbrown’s popularity but for mrbrown, he’s gone off-politics for a while already (man’s got to make a living I guess). He is still top=of-mind when people think about blogs but I’d say most of his readers are looking for more humor rather than an interesting article on the economy etc.
No surprise Online Citizen is there. Abhijit, maybe you had a run of good articles late last year. It woud be interesting to see how the ladder shifts in the next 3 months.
Don’t think we have another local site that can run such reports. Thanks for this. Interesting.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
“Don’t think we have another local site that can run such reports.” LOL. I knew someone would lose the ability to tahan and pat themselves in the back. No prizes who they actually represent. Aha
ABhijit, do you see now why SD called it subtle?????????? I personally think BP should go over to wayang and help them out a bit. Can you imagine if wayang had something really brainy and powerful like the ASDF? Just think about dat!
===============================
As for SD, Internet Cyber officer of the bro, can you please extend
the Korean love fest? Please. And can you get Darkness to give us all
further peeks into the juicy tit bits of the new story line.
Many thanks. Katong Read club No. 30533

February 18th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
hahahahaha. Pls dont remove it. We are all just beginning to start seeing a pattern here. And as the Internet officer said, its very subtle. Do you see it all now? hahahahaha.
No please dont remove this. I will write to Darkness and ask him to personally give this his special tabasco treatment, then after that we can all have a startling good time.
By calling me names all you have done is swing the crowd to my side you vulgar half man.
February 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
No wonder people don’t take blogs seriously. We can’t even stay on topic to talk nicely about something that people bother to spend time and put up.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Ladies & Gentlemen,
Please calm yourself down; the world hasn’t stopped spinning – so lets NOT go around like headless chickens. Let me just clarify my original post; when I say this report was “subtle,” I meant to use a sobriquet term that cognoscenti’s would normally use whenever they savor beluga caviar – that’s to say, it doesn’t pay to wolf it down; as a little usually goes a very long way.
By the same token; if you have a firm grasp of how google analytics works; then some of you will also know there is something higher than KNOWLEDGE and that is UNDERSTANDING (that incidentally is what both mica and ida don’t understand; that is why they find it so difficult to get a handle on the internet, all they have is numbers); what this report gives you is a very NARROW viewpoint into a subject; it’s a bit like trying to figure out how big a building is by counting nails; so its never an accurate representation and it is even less of an approximation; for all you know; it’s a carpenters shed and all the nails are in a box; so all it represents is a very narrow understanding of traffic.
So lets not get flustered just bc Mr Brown was not mentioned doesn’t mean he is not No.1 or why wayang did not make it to No.1 this time; does NOT mean their cumulative readership is some 3.57 times bigger than TOC; as I said, this report is just a vignette; nothing more or less and can never be equated to the truth.
Lets not kill the webmaster here for coming up with this table; IMHO it’s a good effort; as what it does is provoke all sorts of discussion as to how some of us my wish to come across to our target audience; if you notice; we are not even mentioned; what does this mean? Well the short answer is it means everything and nothing at the same time. As we are not even a blog.
So please don’t go around asking Darkness to come down here and tearing up real estate and making my life here difficult; if it comes to that, I will just pack my bags and go back to board games; I am serious.
Another thing, please try to refrain from making sexually explicit statements which do nothing except inflame the sentiments of female readers here (how do you like it, if I asked you to fuck your mother? Understand?); this site is NOT theonlinecitizen where people are summarily censored for NO apparent rhyme or reason except perhaps to gain an unfair advantage by changing the rules of the level playing field; its really as flat a place that exist in blogosphere; but if the privilege is abused; then all of you will have to consider, what happens next?
Keep it clean and remember blogging is all about having fun.
Good Day all and please try to keep the peace.
SD (Internet liaison officer of the brotherhood)

The $64 million question or shall I say the $58 billion (as it really seems like loose change these days) is why EVEN come up with such a report in the first place; if ALL it does is purport to advance a very narrow view.
Aha! For that our friends from mica and ida will have to personally come down here and ask us; I will gladly arrange for a few clever monkeys from our ASDF to guide us through the labybrinth and hopefully you will all discover light.
P.S Make sure you bring a bag of $ – remember a little goes a long way. Just make sure you are all using the 58 billion KPI, and not the 64 million – anything less will just have to be an “admirable sentiment.”
Good day all

At least none of those rubbish star bloggers are on this list :)

SD
Why cant you cut to chase and tell us all?
“The $64 million question or shall I say the $58 billion (as it really seems like loose change these days) is why EVEN come up with such a report in the first place; if ALL it does is purport to advance a very narrow view.”
I am sorry, but am I the only one who seems to be missing more than a page here?
I for one never thought my blog could even make it to the top 50 slot, but it did.
I just want to know how the hell did that happen!
February 18th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Personally, I am surprised at my own stats. Never even expected to be within top 100, let alone at #26 with 699 outwardbound pageviews in Q4 2008. After all I hardly update my blog. Checked out my own blog and I counted I only had 9 updates in that period.
Thanks for the stats though.
February 18th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
I did wonder about the absence of dotseng in GA’s numbers. It does appear in Jan 09 though. I vaguely remember you guys had a break some time back, maybe that was it.
:-)
February 19th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Did you know that the brotherhood have 3 allies in the virtual who regularly fight alongside them. The Totenkopft. Germania. And Ottomans. All of them are organized roughly along the lines of the French Foreign Legion. They (the brotherhood) dont have a standing army. They only use mercenaries. And they all do one thing that separates them from other gamers. They all have this funny way of marching in single file. Everyone who has ever tangled with them knows this. You know why dont you? It helps to hide their numbers.
How can a blog that was in a top position just behind TOC in Jan 09 suddenly disappear from the radar so completely, that it is not even in the 500?
You really believe it is coincidental? Ask SD he knows. He always knows.

Thank you!
