About The Talk
As the global economy continues its recovery, there remains a need for effective global policy to address downside risks. The Asian countries were less affected by the international crisis. Yet, the question remains for Asia: What of the future, in a world where there is little prospect of growth in the large economies of the US and major European countries? Can Europe provide economic leadership for the future?

About The Speaker
Professor , writer, Honorary Member of theCouncil of State, Jacques Attali was the founder and the first President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 1991 to 1993. He was Special Adviser to French President François Mitterrand from 1981 to 1991. Dr Attali is the President of PlaNet Finance, an international non-profit organisation that promotes microfinance institutions in some 80 countries. He was appointed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy in August 2007 to head the Commission for promoting French economic growth. Dr Attali has written some 50 books with over six million copies sold internationally. His works include essays on a wide range of subjects: mathematics, econometrics, music, biographies, and plays. He was named by the US Foreign Policy magazine as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the World.

“Make Singapore Better” – An online brainstorm to make our city better

Local web company Mobrick brings crowdsourcing to cities and public services

15 Nov 2010 – Make Singapore Better ( www.makesingaporebetter.com ) is an online social initiative that gives everyone the chance to change Singapore for the better.

The idea crowdsourcing website developed by local web technology company, Mobrick Pte Ltd ( www.mobrick.com ), asks visitors to post their best ideas for what they would do to make Singapore better, and to vote for ideas from the community.

The website calls for ideas for how to improve public transport, housing, public spaces, and even the things around their neighbourhood, and enables visitors to spread their ideas via Twitter and Facebook.

The website is open for anyone to visit, post ideas, vote or comment on ideas (to help refine and improve them) and browse ideas, and people who want to post ideas can simply and conveniently log in with the Facebook account, Twitter account or register for an account on the website.

The developers of the website hope to see interesting and innovative ideas emerge from the public voting process, and want to help the top-voted ideas spread far enough to get noticed by people who can help to realise them. These include not just government agencies and public sector organisations, but also grassroots and community organisations, as well as individuals with the resources and expertise to make a difference.

Check out Make Singapore Better and help to brainstorm ideas to make our city better at:

Weekly Roundup: Week 46

“The mere act of questioning the norm, a tradition, or the status quo, is an act in freeing oneself from the constraints of authoritarianism and paternalism.”
laïcité

“In keeping the media under the purview of the government so as to determine the boundaries of any public discourse in the media, the PAP has shrewdly ensured that Singaporeans end up looking to the government for answers to even the most fundamental aspects of their existence.”
Pritam Singh

“More than just defending Singapore, we need to actively take part in the writing of her next chapter.”
Lucian Teo

“The primary role of the critics and sceptics is not to find better programmes or solutions. We have the various ministries.. and the very efficient civil service, to find those.”
Ravi Philemon

“Have we been too concerned with the appearances of improvements in our profits and losses, not to realize the cracks that have been appearing within our social systems?”
Christopher Ong

Daily ChioBu: Chrissie Chau

Chrissie Chau 周秀娜 is a model from Hong Kong. Born (22 May 1985) in Guangdong, Chaozhou province, her family moved to Hong Kong when she was 10 years old. During an event in Sha Tin 沙田 in 2008, she was spotted by reporters who thought that she looked a lot like famous HK model Gaile Lai 乐基儿, and nicknamed her the “pirated” Gaile Lai 翻版樂基兒. The nickname stuck and helped propel her popularity in Hong Kong.
