Meet and connect with interesting peeps over a shared meal
Despite the convenience and merits of technology, when it comes to building relationships, a genuine connection is best fostered in real life and, in real-time.
By way of brief introduction, my name is Michelle and nothing gives me more delight than the sheer joy of cooking, hosting, and bringing people together. Over the years, I have personally observed that great meals have a way to magically bring people together in a way that is truly special. As Julia Childs would say, “People who love to eat are always the best people”. That’s right, on top of a hearty meal, throw in some wine as a social lubricant and voila, we have a night of endless chatter and laughter.
I first started toying with creating a Supper Club in Hong Kong as a series of pop-ups this year, under the catchy name “Flirty Fridays” (since I hosted them on Friday evenings). Following much success and popularity, I have decided to take my “Flirty Fridays” across borders to Singapore, under the new label “Sexy Saturdays”.
As a newcomer to the Singapore social scene, one thing I was quick to notice was the relative lack of high quality home-cooked type of meals that are healthy and also deliver on taste. I also noticed that there aren’t too many fun and interactive social activities that bring people together over a shared meal in a cosy and intimate setting.
To that effect, I thought to myself, why not share my love of hosting, cooking and connecting like-minded individuals from all walks of life together in the one seating? Thanks to my friend Jacob (who quickly recognised my passion and style of cooking), he kindly introduced me to Pav from The Hangar, who also shares a similar cooking philosophy; namely, to keep the ingredients fresh and to not overcomplicate the dishes. Think minimalist and rustic, authentic (and healthy) home-cooked food without any canned ingredients, artificial flavors or preservatives.
Due to our shared values and attitudes towards food (maybe cause we are both from Australia), we immediately ‘clicked’ and he loved the idea of hosting a supper club at his venue. After an intense session of planning and devising the menu and logistical arrangements (such as breaking down a brick wall to open up more space – yes, it will be epic), we are pleased to announce that we will be launching our first inaugural supper club dinner on October 1 at The Hangar, 25 Arab Street.
So what’s on the agenda? A welcome signature cocktail to break the ice, followed by an eight course dinner (family style with the choice of one main; vegetarian option available too), a great soundtrack to jive to, and an ‘intermission’ of some fun and games. Top this off with free flow booze and the company of other well-dressed and interesting guests. What more can one ask for on a Saturday evening in Singapore?
