Daily ChioBu: Mai Nishida

Mai Nishida 西田麻衣 (born 23 Mar 1989) is a gravure idol from Kyoto. In 2006, Mai beat 3,000 contestant to win Japan talent agency Space Craft’s swimsuit competition. This was quickly followed by a debut in Weekly Young Sunday alongside famous gravure models Momoko Tani, Natsuko Tatsumi and Mui Yamaguchi. She has since released 11 gravure DVDs, 3 photobooks and her own pin up calendars for 2009 and 2010. Mai has also starred in various Japanese TV Shows such as Ranking Kingdom and Beach Angels, and has released 2 CDs Pink Generation and 31′s LOVE in 2007. In 2009, Mai appeared in 2 movies Teketeke テケテケ and Gurakin Queen グラキン★クイーン and in 2010 she is to appear in the movie 40-Year-Old Figure Skating Coach (COACH コーチ 40歳のフィギュアスケーター).

Daily ChioBu: Sayumi Michishige

Sayumi Michishige 道重 さゆみ (born 13 Jul 1989) is a sixth generation member of the all-girl J-pop group Morning Musume. She is probably best known for her trademark phrase and pose Usa-chan Peace うさちゃんピース (said with index and middle finger V-shapes next to both ears to imitate rabbit ears), which has since been embraced as part of the otaku culture.

Makiyo Kawashima 川島茉樹代 (born 12 Jun 1984) is a singer and actress. Born in Yokohama, Japan, Makiyo’s father is Japanese while her mother is Taiwanese. She moved to Taiwan when she was ten years old, where she enroled at the Taipei Japanese School to learn Mandarin. In 2000, after appearing in a Panasonic cellphone commercial, Makiyo attracted a lot of attention from talent spotters. She soon released her first solo Mandarin album “Makiyo”. Makiyo also began acting, and has since appeared in numerous TV drama series and also as a host in many variety programs. In 2006, after several failed relationships, including Taiwan’s current pop star Luo Zhi Xiang 羅志祥, Makiyo eloped to San Francisco with former boyfriend Milton Chiu 邱舜 (son of Taiwan TV tycoon Chiu Fu-Sheng 邱復生), only to return to Taiwan 7 months later.

Hiroko Sato 佐藤寛子 (born February 17, 1985) is a Japanese gravure idol, actress and singer. Hiroko was born in Fukushima but grew up in the Kanagawa prefecture where she was student council president at her high school. In 2002 Hiroko Sato made her acting debut in the low budget horror movie “Scare” and began a very successful career as a gravure idol. In 2008, Hiroko Sato officially retired from gravure swimsuit modelling in 2008.

Natsuko Tatsumi 辰巳奈都子 (born 21 Jan 1988) is a actress and gravure idol. A graduate from the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute Musashimurayama High School, Natsuko appears regularly on TV commercials and advertising billboards. In 2007, she won the Miss FLASH Idol competition for the popular weekly publication Flash! which bills itself as THE weekly photo magazine. Besides modeling, Natsuko has also appeared in numerous TV series and movies.

Mayuko Iwasa (岩佐真悠子) (born 24 Feb 1987) is a gravure idol and actress. Born in Nerima Tokyo, she made her debut as one of the winners of Miss Magazine 2003. Mayuko got her acting break playing Ayu in the highly popular television adaptation of YOSHI’s novel Deep Love ~Ayu no Monogatari~. In 2005, Mayuko won the Graph Prize at the 42nd Golden Arrow Awards. She was recently seen in the drama Gal Circle as Rika, a ganguro who scams her friends for money.

MuQi MiYa 母其弥雅 (born 20 May 1987) is a well known model in China. The Yunnan native began modeling at the age of 14 and after 8 years, she has established herself as an advertiser darling who fronts regular promotion campaigns for companies. She is best known as China’s most beautiful yoga instructor, a title given by Chinese netizens after she released a yoga pictorial and demonstrated her yoga chops in a TV programme. Besides being a professional Yoga instructor, MuQi MiYa is also a dancer and a Taekwondo master. In the 2010 Tencent Auto Show 腾讯车展, MuQi Miya won the “Favorite Leading Lady” Award, the highest award in the event.

Daily ChioBu: Yuko Ogura

Yuko Ogura 小倉優子 is one of Japan’s most popular gravure idols and actresses with Japanese entertainment agency Avilla. Born in Mobara, Chiba (1 Nov 1983), Yuko had the ambition of becoming a ballet dancer and began taking ballet lessons after school at a very young age. Unfortunately a leg injury forced her to abandon her training. When she left school, a friend suggested she audition for gravure work and when she did she was accepted immediately. On 17 July 2008, Sankei Newspaper’s entertainment website ZakZak awarded Yuko Ogura their first ever Gravure Idol Award. To date, Yuko Ogura has released or participated in over 60 idol videos. She is also well known for singing the theme song "Onno no Ko/Otoko no Ko" of hit anime School Rumble.

Zhou Wei Tong (周伟童) is one of the top models in China. Born in Gui Zhou province 貴州省, she was an athelete before becoming a model. In 2000, she won the 6th Annual National Modeling contest and was rated China’s top 10 professional models in 2001. She began acting and was cast as the lead actress in the TV series 天地真情 in 2003 and 夏日里的春天 in 2004. In 2005, she starred in the movie 大荒野 ”Wilderness”.

Aya Hirayama 平山あや (平山绫) is a Japanese actress best known (to me anyway) for her roles in Water Boys, Tokyo Tower and Haruka 17 (as the lead Haruka). Hirayama is a protege of Japanese talent agency Hori Production, where she first auditioned at the age of 14. Under Hori, she learnt to sing, dance and act. She did photo shoots, TV commercials, TV variety show appearances and dramas, before making her movie debut in 2000. Hirayama’s latest film is “Kagehinata ni Saku” (Bloom in the shade), where she plays a struggling pop singer in Akihabara.

Jessica got her good looks from her American father and Chinese-Filipino mother. She began modeling at age 14. After a very successful showing at the IMTA New York 2003, Jessica was signed by several agencies. Maki Horikita (堀北真希 born 6 Oct 1988) is a Japanese actress. She had her acting debut in 2003 as a U-15 idol and has since starred in a number of Japanese television dramas, television and magazine ads, and films. Born Marina Hara, Horikita started appearing in TV advertisements in 2003. Her first photobooks featured her as a gravure model, but she gradually dropped gravure modeling to concentrate on her acting career. After gaining much recognition in numerous TV dramas, she bagged a Best Actress award for her lead role in the 2007 adaptation of the gender-bender manga Hana-Kimi (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, 花样少年少女). In the same year, she was chosen by Vogue Nippon as one of its eleven recipients of the prestigious Women of the Year award.

Rina Chinen (知念里奈 born 9 Feb 1981) is a singer, model and TV actress. The native Okinawan was trained in dance and song at the Okinawa Actors School, whose graduates include J-pop queen Namie Amuro. Debuting in 1996 with the Single “Do-Do for Me”, Rina’s career transitioned through bouncy pop songs and ballads to rock and then R&B. Her last album “Breath” was released in 2001. In 2002 Rina appeared in the Japanese TV Drama California Dreaming (夢のカリフォルニア Yume no California). This was followed by Central Ikegami Police (こちら本池上署 Kochira Hon Ikegami Sho) which ran successfully for five seasons. In 2007, she appeared in the Tokyo Production of Les Miserables.

Rina Akiyama (秋山莉奈, born 26 Sep 1985) is a Japanese actress and gravure idol. Her most notable appearances are in the Kamen Rider Series, Kamen Rider Agito and Kamen Rider Den-O. She also has a cameo appearance in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in which she is featured in a poster on one of the levels. In 2007, Rina was named “Japan’s Best Butt” 日本一の美尻だ, which earned her the nickname “Oshirina” オシリーナ, a portmanteau of the words “oshiri” (butt) and “Rina”.
