Daily Tech: 30 Dec 2009

It’s a slow tech news week as everyone is celebrating. Except the folks in Microsoft. According to the US court, Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 infringed a Canadian company’s patent. Microsoft is ordered to stop selling Office 2003 and 2007 in the US from 11 Jan 2010. Sounds bad.

But before you start smuggling copies of Office 2007 to US and sell in black market, Microsoft has issued a patch to remove the portion that infringed the patent.

Google Street View Singapore is now live. Woohoo! Singapore is the first country in South East Asia to get Google Street View. Have you found anything interesting on Street View yet? I was hoping to find myself on Street View, but sadly, I wasn’t that lucky.

Oh, by the way, M1 and Starhub has recently announced their iPhone price plan and will start selling iPhone from today. I smell a price war coming.

Not sure if you heard the news. CrunchPad is over. Dead. No more. I always thought that if CrunchPad die, it would be because of pricing or usability. Never did I expect it to be a disagreement between TechCrunch and Fusion Garage. So far, we only heard Mike Arrington’s story. We are not sure what is Fusion Garage’s CEO, Chandra Rathakrishnan’s story.

It is a very wrong move to kick Mike Arrington out of his project. He is an asset to the team. It just don’t make sense to remove him. And even if Fusion Garage managed to settle the lawsuit that Mike is going to file against them, they will never be able to sell the CrunchPad. Judging from the influence of TechCrunch, you can be sure that people are going to boycott that product.

All I can say is, only Leo Laporte can screw Mike Arrington and still walk away with it. Good luck to the folks at Fusion Garage.

Almost a month after M1 announced that they will be selling the iPhone by end of the year, Starhub hop on to the bandwagon and join the iPhone selling telco club. Which means that all 3 telcos in Singapore will be selling the iPhone by end of the year. I think we are the first country in the world to have all telcos selling iPhone. (Correct me if I’m wrong)

Good news for the ebooks lovers out there!! Barnes & Noble has just launched their……. WAIT! Apple has just updated their iMac with 21.5 and 27 Inch LED Screens, Mac Mini with server option, MacBook with 7 Hour Battery and a super good looking Magic Mouse to replace the Mighty Mouse. And I’m so in love with the Magic mouse which has multi-touch. Time to get rid of my “not so mighty” mouse. Oh sorry, what was I saying just now about Barnes & Noble? Eeeerrrr…..

Oh ya! They launched a new ebook reader called Nook. But most likely most people won’t notice it. Rule of thumb, try not to launch anything on a day when Apple is rumored to do a product refresh.

Kindle 2 goes international and will be shipping to 100 countries. But sadly, Singapore is not in the list. Which is weird because countries like Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam will be getting it. Even Congo is getting the Kindle shipped to them! Well, at least Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are also not getting it.

Oh, and M1 will start selling iPhone by end of the year. Bye bye to Singtel’s exclusivity.

Big news for the Palm Fans out there (aka me) this week as Palm announced that it will stop making Windows Mobile phone. Still no news about when Palm Pre or Pixi is coming to Singapore. Sony Ericsson’s new motion activated headset didn’t really change the way we listen to music forever. Google beware, Microsoft launches it’s Office Web Trial to rival Google Doc. Closer to home, MOE adopts Open Standard Internet Email and Collaboration Services from Google.
